The Big Short - 2015 Film

The Big Short

Did You Like The Big Short?

With the 2007-2008 financial crisis as its background and directed by Adam McCay, The Big Short stars big ticket celebrities like Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt. The movie follows the real life events that take place in the lives of Michael Burry, Steve Eisman, Greg Lippman and Ben Hockett, who foresaw the housing bubble, which banks and governments chose to ignore. The Big Short follows their big investment, the big short position they take against the tide of the market. It is a movie about the journey of these four outliers through the crisis.

When the viewers watch the movie, the characters and the story seem far from reality. The nerdy Christian Bale walks around barefoot in his office, a scene that may be thought of as a director’s imagination. However, interestingly enough, it’s not. The real Burry, whose role is played by Bale, not only walks barefoot in his office, but also wears the same clothes for days. He is a metal head by taste, a doctor by education and a hedge fund manager by profession. Like many geniuses, Michael Burry is not much of a talker either; rather he is an introvert. He made so much money on the stock market because he could make sense of the chaos in the stock market. He bet against the booming real estate market, because he knew that the market had given too much credit to non-worthy borrowers. He was the progenitor of the idea that a real estate bubble has formed and that the market was doomed to crash. Michael Burry was the only character in the movie that retained its name.

The narrator in the movie is Ryan Gosling, who too plays the role of the banker, Gregg Lippman. Gregg actually comes to learn about Burry from one of his contacts. He is a talented banker himself, and soon sees through the truth in Burry’s claims. At the time when most of the Burry’s clients were not sure about his investment decisions, Lipman placed his trust in him. Steve Eisman, who is played by Steve Carell is approached by Gregg Lippman, who also agrees with the idea.

Ben Hockett is brought to life by the charming Brad Pitt. The ex-banker comes in touch with Burry after being contacted by Jamie Mai and Charles Ladley, played by Finn Wittrock, and John Magaro respectively.

The movie definitely does not pass the Bechdel test. It has few female characters and with no strong presence either, which is far from truth in both reality and the book, The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine, on which it is based. The other actors who played real people in the movie are Jeremy Strong, who became Vincent Daniel, Rafe Spall, who played Danny Moses, Hamish Linklater, portrayed the real Atwood Collins and the role of Wing Chau was played by Byron Mann.
