The Most Controversial Storylines of “Game of Thrones” That Could Come to a Scandalous End in Season 8

After the shocking Season 7 finale of “Game of Thrones,” in which the army of the undead broke through the Wall that separated them from the kingdom of the North, fans of the HBO show have been eagerly debating some of the most controversial storylines of the past season. Season 8 is currently scheduled to be just six episodes, and that means a lot of the complex stories, threads and narratives that have made the show so addicting for seven seasons will soon be coming to an end. So what can we expect in Season 8? [WARNING: Spoilers ahead!]

What will happen to Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen?

Arguably, these are the two biggest stars of “Game of Thrones” right now, and what happens to their relationship is going to determine how Season 8 finally ends. The two are now linked in both a military alliance and a budding romantic relationship – but it has also been shown that Jon Snow is actually the long-lost Targaryen heir to the Iron Throne. Yes, Jon Snow is actually Aegon Targaryen, son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. That would make him the nephew of Daenerys – and it would also mean that the growing relationship between the two is now incest!

And here’s what makes this relationship angle even spicier – in Season 7, Jon Snow might have impregnated Daenerys, which means that the royal bloodlines to the Iron Throne will become messier still if they decide to part ways. And don’t forget – Jon Snow has officially “bent the knee” to Daenerys, pledging to support her. He does not yet know his true identity and his right to ascend the Iron Throne. And the leaders of Winterfell in the North have always been opposed to all things Targaryen. Things could get messy here, really fast!

Which romantic suitor will win the hand of Daenerys?

On a related note, it’s not just Jon Snow who is hoping to court Daenerys and win her affection. There are at least two others – Ser Jorah Mormont (who was especially fond of her in Season 1 and helped her to rise to power amongst the Dothraki) and Tyrion Lannister (who has emerged as her key supporter and strategist in the battle for the Iron Throne) who are attempting to win over Daenerys.

Will Jaime and Cersei Lannister ever reconcile?

The last we saw of these two incestuous lovers in Season 7, they had officially parted ways. Jaime Lannister had tired of all of his sister’s manipulations and lies, and had gone off to the fight the army of the undead (the White Walkers and the Wights) in the North. But will their paths cross again?

Fans of the show have pointed out that one of the ancient prophecies is that Queen Cersei would die at the hands of her “little brother.” Until now, we assumed that meant Tyrion Lannister, the youngest of the Lannisters. But now fans are speculating it could mean Jaime Lannister, who is officially younger than Cersei by a few minutes, despite them being twins. Plus, Jaime Lannister has the reputation of being a “kingslayer” – so will he now turn into a “queen-slayer” as well?

Who will win the Great War between men and the undead?

Now that the Night King is on the march in Westeros, we can never be sure what happens next. He has the “ice dragon” Viserion, as well as a massive army of White Walkers and Wights. But the kingdom of the North is getting reinforcements, in the form of the dragon army of Daenerys. And there’s more – Jon Snow might have found a way to mine for dragon glass, which would make it possible to forge new weapons capable of killing the undead.

There are really so many related questions here as well, such as just about everything to do with those dragons! Right now, we know that Daenerys will ride the mighty Drogon, while the Night King will ride Viserion. But who will ride Rhaegal? One assumption is that Jon Snow might turn into a dragon-rider in Season 8. (Bonus points here: Jon Snow is the son of Rhaegar, the namesake for Rhaegal)

Which reunions of long-lost characters can we expect to wrap up Season 8?

Fans have also been speculating madly about possible reunions that would cap off Season 8 and help to provide a sense of closure for the show. For example, what about Jon Snow (a bastard son of the Starks) and Arya Stark? We haven’t seen these two together since Season 1, when Jon Stark gave her a toy sword to practice with! Or what about Tyrion Lannister and Sansa Stark? Sansa has been through a lot with the Lannisters, but fans are now speculating that Tyrion and Sansa might end up as lovers in the end.

Which prophecies will we see fulfilled in Season 8 of “Game of Thrones”?

Prophecies have always been a key part of the world of Westeros, and there are still many more to be fulfilled before the end. Many of these concern the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, and as we’ve seen with each new season, characters on “Game of Thrones” tend to misconstrue these prophecies in ways that lead to ill-advised future actions.

What will be the biggest WTF moment in Season 8?

Finally, what about the biggest surprise or reveal of Season 8? One popular theory online is that Samwell Tarly – now technically the heir to Horn Hill – will emerge as a star in some way to save the day for Westeros. Remember – he has stolen secret books from the Citadel, and he might have stumbled on new secrets about how to fight the armies of the dead.

One thing is certain: there is guaranteed to be plenty of action, excitement, drama and sexual tension in Season 8 of “Game of Thrones.” We’ll be waiting eagerly for the new season on HBO, and in the meantime, we’ll be once again poring over all the juicy, scandalous details that have come to light in Season 7.
