The book Black Mass is said to be a true story built on a man named William “Billy” Bulger. It also included the lives of Whitey Bulger, John Connolly an FBI agent, and J. Edgar Hoover’s witness protection program. Filming started off in Boston on May 19th, 2014. Scenes were shot in Dorchester, the Polish American Club, East Boston, Copley Square, Quincy, South Boston, the Harvard Club, Revere Beach, and the former Anthony’s Hawthorne restaurant. On August 1st of 2014 filming for Black Mass was concluded.
Black Mass’ cast is: Johnny Depp as Whitey Bulger, Joel Edgerton as John Connolly, Benedict Cumberbatch as William “Billy” Bulger, Dakota Johnson as Lindsey Cyr, Kevin Bacon as Charles McGuire, Jesse Plemons as Kevin Weeks, Corey Stoll as Fred Wyshak, Peter Sarsgaard as Brian Holloran, David Harbour as John Morris, Rory Cochrane as Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi, Julianne Nicholson as Marianne Connolly, James Russo as Scott Garriola, Adam Scott as Robert Fitzpatrick, Jeremy Strong as Josh Bond, Brad Carter as John McIntyre, W. Earl Brown as Johnny Martorano, Juno Temple as Deborah Hussey, Erica McDermott as Mary Bulger, and Berglind Jónsdóttir as Anna Björnsdóttir.
Whitey Bulger is an infamous gangster who is up in fame with other notorious figures such as Al Capone. He became godfather, basically, of the Irish mob. Barry Levinson had initially had the project but it was handed over to Scott Cooper. Aside from the fact that Cooper was already quite intrigued by Bulger, in 2011 something happened that made his connection even more fascinating and strong. In that year Bulger was discovered in hiding in Santa Monica, California, which also happened to be mere miles from where Cooper himself lived.
Although Bulger was, obviously, a villain, he was in many ways looked at as a somewhat hero in the community, rather like Robin Hood. It was true he was an outlaw those who were nearby saw him in almost a protective, community sense, as though he belonged with them or to them. He was known as being something of a good Samaritan; he even helped old women and had a habit of handing out food during the holidays. In the end, however, Bulger and his gang became even more ominous a threat than the mafia, but the Boston community was slow in realizing the full scale of things.
As the years went by Bulger was allowed to conduct his business virtually in plain site. How was this possible? He was in part being shielded by a certain branch of the Boston FBI. It was the FBI, also, that warned him about imminent indictment, giving him the opportunity to flea in 1995. For 16 years Bulger was missing. In fact, for much of that time he was number 2 on the FBI’s most wanted list. Only Osama bin Laden outranked him.
Another interesting dimension of the story is Whitey Bulger’s younger brother William. William was, essentially, Whitey’s opposite. He was a man of faith and took good care of his family. In time he also rose up in society making a big name for himself. He became a very powerful man who was quite well known as a noteworthy politician and a president of the Massachusetts State Senate. When confronted by the authorities he refused to help them locate his brother or give any information about him. This lead him to resign from his position as president of the Massachusetts State Senate.
The movie is based on many actual facts which took place, and the characters are modeled after the real people involved. The film will be packed full of vengeance, beatings, murder, mayhem, and other exciting happenings. It obviously has a few famous names, Depp and Cumberbatch definitely among them and offering a big selling point and plenty of promise for Black Mass. As the movie has, at this time, not even been released yet, there is not a whole lot that has been decided on—in regards to opinions and ratings. So far, however, things are looking rather favorable and promising.
At this point Metacritic has given the film an approval rating of 71%, Rotten Tomatoes gives it 80%, and IMDb gives it a rather outstanding 9.1/10 stars. Right now things are looking pretty bright for Black Mass, but the film has time, yet, to prove its worth and ratings may definitely fluctuate especially at this early stage. A lot of good things are being said about Depp’s work in the film. One viewer disliked the “physical transformation” which Depp underwent in order to play the part, but this did not seem to bother very many people. There have been relatively few negative remarks about Black Mass —they are few and far between, but, they are out there and time will certainly unearth a few more. Thus far the movie has been received quite favorably, especially by Johnny Depp fans. Praise has been given to the other actors as well, such as Nicholson and Cumberbatch. Many people are calling Black Mass a “masterpiece” and saying it will garner an Oscar. For now, time will tell all, and it is no secret, however, that the film is very highly anticipated.
