Netflix has come a long way since its early days as a Blockbuster rival. In addition to being the leading service for streaming TV shows and movies, Netflix now has a sizable collection of its own original programming. There are many Netflix originals that are worth a look or two, including many shows that definitely fit under the category of ‘must see’ TV. Of course, the great thing about “must see” Netflix shows are that you can watch them at your leisure; whether you’re the type to binge watch an entire season over the weekend or you’d rather take it slow.
No matter how you prefer to watch TV, if you’re looking for something original and special to watch on Netflix, take a look at the following must-see Netflix shows.
This upbeat, quirky show written by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock is a perfect mood elevator. The show stars Ellie Kemper as the titular Kimmy Schmidt, who is one of four women held hostage in an underground bunker for years by a cult leader. This may seem like a strange premise for a show described as upbeat, quirky and a great mood booster—but the show’s focus on the native, kind-hearted Kimmy making her way through modern day New York gives the story an uplifting and hilarious tone. Great performances by the cast round out the writing to make The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt a definite must-watch.
Sense8 is a science-fiction series from the minds of the Wachowski siblings. The series follows eight people who are suddenly linked emotionally and mentally after a tragic death. The show comes just after the box office flop of the Wachowski’s latest film, Jupiter Ascending, which left many fans wondering if the show’s quality would match–for better or worse–that of the infamous ‘Ascending’ film. Contrary to popular expectations, however, Sense8 is a smart, dynamic and intriguing science fiction show–and it’s made all the more intriguing because of the general lack of science fiction original programming on Netflix. If you’re in the mood for something a bit cerebral, take a look at Sense8.
If you haven’t started watching Orange is the New Black yet, you are missing out on one of the smartest, more entertaining shows currently in production—both on and off Netflix! The series is based on the real life memoir of Piper Kerman, who found herself in prison after becoming involved with a drug cartel and wrote about her experiences dealing with the prison system, fellow prisoners, and her own journey as she discovered truths about herself. Although the show changes character names and relationships, and frequently ups the stakes with more drama that wasn’t present in the original book, it is an undeniably addicting to watch. One of the reasons for the show’s amazing success is its diverse cast and its more grounded portrayal of prison life—and prisoners—which defies the usual expectations most people have of what people in prison are really like.
